Types of Attic Insulation
Attic insulation is a vital part of the home and helps to prevent energy loss. It keeps hot air out during the summer and cold air in during the winter, which saves you money on your utility bills while also increasing comfort levels throughout your home.
There are four major types of insulation available: fiberglass batts, cellulose, loose-fill and spray foam. Each type is rated for its R-value which measures how much it prevents the transfer of heat per inch.
Fiberglass batts are the most common choice, and are a cheap, easy-to-install option. They come in rolls that can be cut to length, and are available for most home improvement stores. Fiberglass can be mold and mildew-resistant, which makes it a great option for attics.
The Importance of Attic Insulation for Home Efficiency
Loose-fill insulation (sometimes called blown-in insulation) is a more eco-friendly alternative. It is composed of a mix of recycled materials, such as shredded newsprint, paper and cardboard or industrial waste. It is a cost-effective option that provides excellent acoustic properties and can be used in nooks and crannies. However, loose-fill insulation will settle over time and may reduce its R-value.
Cellulose insulation is a more dense alternative that is made of recycled paper and other materials. It is very effective at reducing sound and has an R-value of up to 3.5 per inch. However, it can cause a lot of dust during installation.
Spray foam is a more expensive option that is very effective at reducing sound and providing an R-value of up to 5.5 per inch. However, it is not suitable for all homes and requires professional installation. In addition, the chemicals used to create this type of insulation can be harmful if they contact your skin. Therefore, professionals need to wear protective clothing and a mask during installation.
